Faith and begorra: we almost trapped a leprechaun! The kindergarten classes at FRA set an elaborate trap counting on the leprechaun’s greed for gold. A small set of steps made from Lincoln Logs led up to the package wrapped in gold foil. But, alas, all the mischievous mannie left behind was his small bowler and a terrible mess trashing the classrooms with green paper! Standing before the trap and looking for clues are Victoria Roberson, Hunter Evans, Mrs. Tina Turner, Mason McCartney, Caleb Byers, Emily Rogers, Paige Neal, and Caroline Brown. |

Teddy Bear Day
By Jennifer Boatwright
The second grade held its annual "Teddy Bear Day" not long ago. On this day, the students bring their favorite teddy bear to school. Each student had one teddy bear which was "enrolled" for the day at FRA. Students were instructed to fill out a form about their teddy bear including name, when they got it and how they took care of it. Then, they wrote a story about their bears and took pictures with their bears. They also had to make their bears "behave" throughout that school day.
Believe it or not, teddy bears did not always have "teddy" in their name. The second graders learned that the name for teddy bears is actually historic and came from Teddy Roosevelt himself. |

Franklin, Edison, and Ampiere gonna be's
Tyler Harris along with his fifth grade classmates traveled to Shenandoah where they studied electricity, currents, magnets, and more. They wrapped a wire around a screw and made a magnet. They took a D battery, wires, and Christmas string of lights, and paper clip and made an electrical circuit. Using the paper clip to turn the light on and off was fun for the budding MacGyvers. |

4K learns the letter "M"
Mrs. Cindy Smith had ready access to this learning resource when her class was ready to learn the letter M. Really, is there anything cooler than a Harley? Miss Cindy's husband readily agreed to bring the Harley to school as he enjoys a reason to bike. Each student sat on the monster machine, admired its shiny chrome, envied Mr. Smith's leather outfit, and pretty much put a Harley on his or her wish list for Christmas. |

Hurricane Season and the Saga of the Monarchs
On Labor Day weekend Mrs. Riggins visited her sister at Tybee. She brought back Monarch butterfly larvae that were on a milkweed bush at her sister's home and gave it to the kindergarten classes to watch develop. But the larvae rapidly devoured the entire milkweed that Mrs. Riggins brought back with her. Miss Tina and Miss Sally researched what Monarchs eat and, yuck, they only eat milkweed, and if they don't get milkweed, they will die! Luckily for the butterflies, another hurricane breezed into Savannah so Mrs. Riggins' sister evacuated and brought more milkweed with her when she came to Woodbury. Happy ending: the butterflies continued to eat and hatched. |

4-H
FRA fifth graders are having a great time with 4-H Club this year. The club meetings are led by Miss Julie whose leadership is making a positive impact. Students are excited about District Project Achievement (DPA) and they are doing research as they get ready to present and do demonstrations on a variety of topics. Shayna Paul has chosen horse shoeing as her project since she loves horses and riding. But she is checking out library books, interviewing people, and combing the internet for material. Know what the four h's stand for? Head, heart, hands, health. |

Johnny Appleseed's Birthday
The first day of autumn at Flint River Academy means a celebration of Johnny Appleseed's birthday by the second grade. Dressed in period costume and the traditional cooking pot or coonskin cap for a hat, the students delivered apples throughout the school.
Kindergarten students at FRA invited their grandparents in for a special day of making memories. Together they created fall trees garbed in golds, oranges, reds and yellows. Mrs. Becky Prior helps her grandson Mason McCartney glue fall leaves on his tree and Mr. Pat O'Rouke helps his granddaughter Sydney King |

Getting the real text message
The Whisper Phone
By using a cheap piece of plumbing PVC, Mrs. Lee's fourth grade students at Flint River Academy have a personalized learning tool. The "Whisper Phone" is an acoustical voice-feedback gadget that enables students to hear the sounds that make up words (phonemes) more clearly as they learn to read, spell, and process language. It is an added advantage that it is fun to use too. Students can hear phonemes ten times more clearly with the curve of PVC plumbing which means that they can hear themselves better and can focus better on what they're learning. Gracie Harris, Brett Williamson, and Taylor Brown are engrossed in their reading and "texting. |
