Flint River Academy Third Graders Grow Giant Cabbages

Third Graders at Flint River Academy in Woodbury Georgia are participating in the Bonnie Plant Farm’s Third Grade Cabbage Program. Each student received
an oversized cabbage plant that will produce oversized heads, along with instructions for planting. After about 10 to 12 weeks, the cabbages should be ready
for harvest. Students can then take pictures of their “Big Cabbage” and send it to Bonnie Plant Farm to enter to win a $1,000 savings bond.

Each year Bonnie Plants distributes free cabbage plants to third grade classes across America to foster interest in gardening and the environment.
Ms. Della Jo Turner and Mrs. Yvonne Atlkins are the third grade teachers involved in the program at Flint River Academy.

Flint River Academy Students Learn About Native Americans

First and second graders at Flint River Academy welcomed four special guests who shared the history and artifacts of local Native Americans.

Stan and Rocky Cartwright of the Creek Nation explained their ancestry and the Creek Indians’ ties to the local area of The Cove and the Flint River. Stan Cartwright is the Vice Chief of Georgia Outreach for the Perdido Bay Tribe of the Lower Muscogee Creek Indians of Pensacola Florida. He currently lives in Warm Springs and is the grandfather of second grader Caroline Cartwright and fifth grader Caylee Cartwright. Stan and Rocky provide educational presentations for Georgia Schools at no charge.

Larry Elliot is the grandfather of FRA Senior Matt Montgomery and Bill Caldwell is the father of second grader Will Caldwell and fifth grader Marilee Caldwell. Each had interesting information on the artifacts they presented – how the original was created and used and how items such as arrowheads and pottery pieces can be found right here in Meriwether County.

The informative guests tied the Native American history to the students’ unit on the first Thanksgiving, where they learned that the Pilgrims traveled to Massachusetts in search of religious freedom and the Native Americans taught the Pilgrims how to survive that first year in their new land.

Ms. Amanda's 3K class had fun jumping in a pile of fall leaves!

Flint River Academy 2nd graders celebrated Teddy Bear Day by bringing their beloved Teddy Bears to school.

Students learned that the Teddy Bear was named after President Theodore Roosevelt.  The story is that in Novemeber 1902,
President Roosevelt
was on a hunting trip with friends in Mississippi.  Roosevelt had not shot any animals all day.
Finally, the group surrounded a helpless bear.  The guide asked the president to shoot it, but he refused.  News reporters
quickly spread the story and a famous cartoonist named Clifford Berryman created a cartoon based on the incident.
A store owner in Brooklyn saw the cartoon and asked the president for permission to market a toy bear named Teddy's Bear!

The 3K class has been enjoying a unit on farms.  Thursday Ms Amanda and Ms Stacey prepared a traditional farm breakfast
of eggs, grits, biscuits, and bacon.  Friday the class took a field trip to Ison's Farm.  They were treated to a hay ride, learned
about spiders and pumpkins, built a scarecrow, and fed catfish and farm animals!

FRA 2nd Graders Pay Tribute to Johnny Appleseed

Flint River Academy second graders celebrated Johnny Appleseed’s birthday last Monday by delivering apples throughout school.
They dressed in pioneer clothing appropriate to the time period and paraded through school visiting classrooms with a variety of apples.
Later they sampled the different varieties of apples and voted on their favorite type!

FRA 3rd Graders Study Communities

Flint River Academy third graders have been exploring communities in Social Studies class. They have learned about the variety of communities in our world and their relationships to each other. The students each created a poster project on their personal community, compiling facts and pictures. The project allowed them to learn more about their community and their important place in it. FRA students, parents, and staff are enjoying the posters and learning more about Woodbury, Thomaston, Newnan, Warm Springs, Griffin, Manchester, Saint Marks, Woodland, Greenville, Gay, Luthersville, Shiloh, and Molena!

Photo caption: FRA 3rd graders Bhumi Patel, Wesley Smith, Catie Evans, and McCall Mitchell proudly display their community posters.

Pet Rocks

The third graders had fun creating very clever pet rocks using beads, pompoms, yarn, wiggly eyes, and other craft materials. They are currently living in the library. Stop by and meet them!
