FRA History
The Academy was founded in March, 1967 by a group of Woodbury citizens concerned with the declining quality of education. The school opened its doors in August, 1967, under the guidance of Headmaster John Moore. With Mr. Moore's direction and aid of many parents and supporters, Flint River Academy achieved an early level of excellence in both academic and extracurricular areas.
Flint River Academy has steadily
increased in size from the original 130 students. Currently,
the
school attracts students from the nine surrounding counties in West
Central Georgia by adhering to those goals and objectives that have
brought success and recognition to past graduates.
Since its inception, Flint River Academy has sought to prepare each student for college while developing "behavior consistent with and favorable to the perpetuation of a free,
self-governing, and truth seeking society." The goal of the academy is to provide an atmosphere where the academically gifted
student is challenged, the average student is stimulated, and the undeveloped student is understood and encouraged. The administration and faculty of Flint River Academy believe that the school should offer each student the opportunity to develop his mind, body, and spirit. Upon graduation from this institution a student should be prepared to assume the role of a responsible citizen. For this reason the administration and faculty support the value of a liberal arts education.
The administration and faculty of Flint River Academy believe that each student should develop to the fullest extent of his abilities in each of the following areas:
-
Self-realization: The complete fulfillment or development of the self and all its possibilities.
-
Human
relationships: The ties or connections which exist between individuals and groups.
-
Civic
responsibility: The performance of duties for which a citizen may be held accountable.
-
Economic
efficiency: The ability to earn one's livelihood with a minimum of effort, expense, and waste.

Flint River Academy also has a 200 seat cafeteria set up to provide hot, nourishing lunches to all students at reasonable costs. A lighted football field, weightlifting and locker room field house, baseball and softball fields, regulation track, three primary school play areas, and ample parking complete the facilities. Long range goals include increased paved parking areas and a fine arts center.
In order to make high quality education available to a greater segment of West Central Georgia, a fleet of buses provides service to the surrounding areas.
Curriculum and Faculty
The curriculum at Flint River Academy is directed toward preparing students for college. In high school, advanced courses in English, Science, Social Studies, Math, Foreign Language and Speech are required for all students. In addition, courses are offered in business, art, computer, keyboarding, publications, and music to develop scholars capable of handling all aspects of college life.
The elementary school curriculum places great emphasis on "The Three R's." In the lower grades, a wide range of subjects and activities are offered to expose children to many different areas of study, but the basics of education are stressed. Activities available to all lower school students include dancing, piano, physical education, music and art. Grades four through eight are departmentalized to allow for area specialists. Reading, Math, and English specialists join experts in Social Studies and Science to ensure the student a firm educational foundation.
The Academy's commitment to high quality education extends to class size as well. The student-teacher ratio throughout the school is 12 - 1 with para-professionals used in conjunction with teachers in the lower school. Nearly fifty per cent of Flint River's faculty have earned advanced degrees in their fields and most teachers are currently pursuing such degrees.
Extracurricular Activities
Extracurricular activities play an important role in the education offered at Flint River Academy. The high level of participation and degree of excellence attests to the success of the academy's extracurricular program.
The literary teams, debate teams, one-act play casts, and academic contest teams consistently place high in state competitions. Individual members of these teams have traditionally won state acclaim. Y Clubs, National Honor Society, Pep Club, 4-H Club, Chess Club, Student Government, student publications and Thespians are some of the clubs and activities available to students at the academy. Choraliers, an advanced performing choir, has established a high degree of excellence and presents many public concerts locally during the year.
Success in extracurricular is not only limited to literary pursuits, but also extends to athletic contests as well. The academy's teams compete in football, basketball, tennis, baseball, track, golf, and softball on an interscholastic level. Many of these programs are available to middle as well as upper school students. Many of these teams are extremely successful on a state level and the Flint River Cheerleaders have won national acclaim.

Middle School Dedication and Ribbon Cutting at Flint River Academy
It was a proud moment for Woodbury guests, faculty members and especially the Board of Trustees of Flint River Academy on Tuesday, October 6th when they held the official ribbon cutting ceremony for the new middle school building.
The Board of Trustees broke ground on the new 13,000 square foot building on March 30th and the project was completed in time for students to use on the first day of school on August 10th. The facility houses 140 students in grades 5 through 8. Each classroom is equipped with interactive whiteboards; there is a foreign language classroom plus two “supersized” labs - one for the biological sciences and another twenty-five station computer lab.
Flint River’s headmaster, Marlowe Hinson, addressed those gathered for the ceremony and said, “It is a proud addition to our already beautiful campus and I am honored to be apart of its completion. This building is a shining example of the vision we have for our campus in the years to come.”
Cliff Elliott, chairman of Flint River’s board of trustees, expressed similar sentiments and added, “This was an effort that was made possible because there were so many that were willing to donate time, talents, and materials. We are fortunate to have the strong support of the Flint River family and community.”

“It is wonderful, all of it, just wonderful,” said lead teacher Gayle Porter. Echoing her thoughts was middle school science teacher Nancy Riggins, who was quick to point out areas to tour and highlight details that were included that make the school state-of-the-art.
The plan for the new addition began several years with faculty meetings gathering teacher input, architects adding their thoughts, and teachers touring facilities at other schools. The middle school building is the first step in Phase I of an exciting Campus Master Plan which includes renovated athletic fields, a Fine Arts facility and a new high school. If you are interested in touring the new facility and seeing the Flint River campus, you can schedule a time by calling (706) 553-2541.
The Flint River Academy Board of Trustees snip the ribbon and welcome guests to tour the new middle school- the first major construction on the Woodbury campus since the school’s early growth in the 1970s.
