Ms. Lee's sixth grade science classes learned about chemical reactions by erupting volcanoes! Each group built the volcano and researched the combinations of
ingredients that would result in an eruption. Students were very creative with their construction materials - bottles, flower vases, chicken wire, plaster, cake, mud,
paper, rocks, paint. There were numerous ways to achieve the volcanic reaction too. Some students used vinegar, baking soda, Diet Coke, mentos, pop rocks,
dish soap...some even used strawberry syrup or food coloring to make their lava appear red!

Students learned that the Teddy Bear was named after President Theodore Roosevelt. The story is that in Novemeber 1902, President Roosevelt was on a hunting trip with friends in Mississippi. Roosevelt had not shot any animals all day. Finally, the group surrounded a helpless bear. The guide asked the president to shoot it, but he refused. News reporters quickly spread the story and a famous cartoonist named Clifford Berryman created a cartoon based on the incident. A store owner in Brooklyn saw the cartoon and asked the president for permission to market a toy bear named Teddy's Bear! |

It was a proud moment for Woodbury guests, faculty members and especially the Board of Trustees of Flint River Academy on Tuesday, October 6th when they held the official ribbon cutting ceremony for the new middle school building.
The Board of Trustees broke ground on the new 13,000 square foot building on March 30th and the project was completed in time for students to use on the first day of school on August 10th. The facility houses 140 students in grades 5 through 8. Each classroom is equipped with interactive whiteboards; there is a foreign language classroom plus two “supersized” labs - one for the biological sciences and another twenty-five station computer lab.
Flint River’s headmaster, Marlowe Hinson, addressed those gathered for the ceremony and said, “It is a proud addition to our already beautiful campus and I am honored to be apart of its completion. This building is a shining example of the vision we have for our campus in the years to come.”
Cliff Elliott, chairman of Flint River’s board of trustees, expressed similar sentiments and added, “This was an effort that was made possible because there were so many that were willing to donate time, talents, and materials. We are fortunate to have the strong support of the Flint River family and community.”
“It is wonderful, all of it, just wonderful,” said lead teacher Gayle Porter. Echoing her thoughts was middle school science teacher Nancy Riggins, who was quick to point out areas to tour and highlight details that were included that make the school state-of-the-art.
The plan for the new addition began several years with faculty meetings gathering teacher input, architects adding their thoughts, and teachers touring facilities at other schools. The middle school building is the first step in Phase I of an exciting Campus Master Plan which includes renovated athletic fields, a Fine Arts facility and a new high school. If you are interested in touring the new facility and seeing the Flint River campus, you can schedule a time by calling (706) 553-2541.
